Play it Again Sports, Concord - October 17, 2017

As they say in show business…the show must go on.  #TinaTuesday is back and today and I visited with Chamber Member Alex Bordak at Play It Again Sports on Contra Costa Blvd.

As a mom whose son played baseball, I frequented Play It Again Sports quite a bit, but today I came out of there with a whole new perspective.  Alex and his family have owned Play It Again Sports since 2012 when it moved to its new location at 1150 Contra Costa Blvd.  They are a sporting goods store that buys, sells & trades a wide variety of equipment, both new & secondhand.  Alex loves what he does and the many ways he supports our community and it shows.  Moms and Dads can come in and get their kids fully outfitted for whatever sport they are doing that month for half the cost of buying new.  Do you have a New Year’s resolution you are still working on?  Check out their new and used treadmills and ellipticals.  Do you need a new or gently used golf club, surfboard, skateboard, tennis racket or roller blades?  They have it all.  It’s amazing how much of whatever you need sports or fitness wise they have.  Something you may not have known about Play it Again Sports is that they work very closely with the police departments on stolen items that people are attempting to sell to them, mostly bikes.  Basically, every bike has a serial number (which I didn’t know), and if a bike is brought in without a serial number or the person has no id, Play It Again Sports won’t buy it.  Those that do have serial numbers are then checked through a special website used by police departments to see if that bike had been reported stolen.  They have been instrumental in retrieving a number of stolen bikes that the police have been able to return to their rightful owner.  Note to self:  Find serial number on my bike and write it down in case it’s stolen.  Oh, AND they also give 10% off to all firefighters, police, EMT/First Responders, Teachers, Military and Uniformed Officers.  So, guess what PH Chamber Members???  Alex is going to extend that discount to Pleasant Hill Chamber Members as well.  Wow!  Thank you so much Alex!

Here are some more fun facts I found out…

  • Did you know there is a Bicycle Blue Book that can tell you how much a bicycle is worth (who knew?)
  • Everything they sell is priced at 50% off of the retail price.  So, imagine getting that already broken in baseball glove that’s in great shape for 50% less than what it sells for brand new
  • If you bring something in to sell or trade, they will give you 30% (of the ½ off retail price) in cash, or 40% (of the ½ off retail price) in store credit for that item.
  • They also have a full service bike shop, so if you need some work on your bike, they’ll take care of it
  • They will even come to you if you need something fixed, like that broken treadmill that’s been sitting in the corner of your living room forever (oh wait that’s me).
  • If they receive too much of an item, they donate to local charities like White Pony Express
  • They also take consignment items and pay 50% of what the item ends up selling for

Thank you Alex for taking the time to fill me in on all the great things you have in your store and all that you do in our community.  It’s always a joy to meet someone in our community that does so much, so quietly.  That’s what #TinaTuesday is for, to introduce you all to people like Alex.
